'Sense Of Place'

'My work explores the internal landscape, the shifting terrain of memory, emotion, and the subconscious. I approach each painting intuitively, allowing the process to unfold without a predetermined outcome. This openness enables an honest dialogue between instinct and material, where each gesture informs the next. Working primarily with oil and cold wax, I build and remove layers to reveal traces of what lies beneath. These surfaces hold a sense of history and transformation, mirroring the fluid nature of thought and feeling. I’m drawn to the balance between freedom and control. Moments where order emerges from chaos. Through colour, texture, and mark-making, I seek to translate emotional complexity into a visual language that invites reflection and connection.'
Jess Elliott is a British, self taught abstract artist, based in Oxfordshire, England. Working primarily with oil and cold wax, she creates richly coloured and textured paintings that explore the depths of the subconscious and the complexities of the human mind. Largely self-taught, Elliott began her full-time artistic practice in 2024, developing a distinctive visual language rooted in intuition, emotion, and material exploration. Her paintings are built through a process of layering, scraping back, and revealing. A physical dialogue that mirrors the layered nature of memory and thought. Through this approach, Elliott seeks to uncover ‘What lies beneath,’ using the materiality of paint itself as a metaphor for the shifting states of consciousness. Working from her home studio, she continues to push the boundaries between control and spontaneity, embracing both the chaos and calm that emerge in the act of creation.
